Natural Selection (NS) has got to be
the best MOD, by far, for Half-Life. NS has multiple
choices of game play, NS (Where you build structures and
try to kill the opposing team’s base) and CO (Where you
gain levels with experience and try to kill the enemy's
Hive or Command Center).
In NS (Natural-Selection)
Mode, you gain Resources (Res) and you can build and
purchase many things with your Res. On the Aliens, you
can change Life Forms with your Res, build structures,
and purchase upgrades. On the Marine Team, the Commander
(Comm) is in charge of all of the Res (The Aliens share
their Res). The Commander can place the structure, but
the Marines have to build it. The Commander can also
drop Shotguns (Shotties), Heavy Machine Guns (HMGs),
Grenade Launchers (GLs), Welders, etc. The Aliens are
mainly melee fighters, with the exception of a few Life
forms (Lerks, with Spores, and Fades, with Acid Rocket)
NS Mode requires teamwork
to win. For example, on the Aliens team, someone must
build Resource Towers (RTs), someone has to go Fade,
someone needs to build Upgrade Chambers (Defense
Chambers, Movement Chambers, or Sensory Chambers) and
somebody has to save their Res to put up another Hive,
which allows you to get new attacks, such as Bile Bomb
for the Gorges, Leap for the Skulk, Umbra for the Lerks,
you get the idea. On the Marines, the Commander must
listen to the needs of the Marines, and the Marines must
follow the orders of the Commander. If the Commander is
trying to ruin the game by recycling the Infantry
Portals (IPs) that allow the Marines to spawn, or is
slow by not getting upgrades, buildings etc, the Marines
can eject him. But if the Marines don't listen to the
Commander, the Commander can't do squat. If the Marines
don't listen, it is a Comm’s worst nightmare, because he
can just sit there and yell at them.
In CO (Combat) Mode, you
gain levels and purchase upgrades with each level.
Basically, CO is for people who like to Rambo and not
have to listen to anybody. You simply have to destroy
their CC or Hive, depending which team you're on. CO
Mode is straightforward and requires no teamwork
whatsoever. If you hate listening to your team, just go
to CO Mode; Although if you want to win it’s still a
good idea to listen to your team.
